Recommendations for free parking spaces in Italy
During my numerous travels through Italy, I was often faced with the challenge of finding a free parking space. This is not so easy, especially in popular holiday regions - parking spaces are often rare and expensive.
However, over time, I've collected some practical tips that make free parking possible in many popular places.
In this post, I share my personal recommendations and experiences for free parking at various destinations in Italy. These tips can help you not only save money, but also travel more relaxed – without having to spend hours looking for a parking space.
Here are my insider tips for free parking in the following cities and towns:
- Genoa
- Sestri Levante
- Arenzano
- Nervi
- Camogli
- Reggio Calabria
- Tropea
- Pizzo
- Scilla
Important: In general, the following applies in Italy:
- Parking spaces with a white line = free
- Parking spaces with a blue line = paid parking
- Parking spaces with a yellow line = reserved for residents and government agencies, e.g., PP = Private Parking -> avoid being towed!
Free parking in Genoa
In Liguria, you can find some free parking spaces in the city of Genoa.
Football stadium
In front of the stadium "Stadio Luigi Ferraris" there is a large free Park & Ride car park at the "Piazzale Atleti Azzurri d'Italia". From there you can reach the centre by bus or on foot. However, please note that this car park is only available when there is no football match. Since there are two football teams in Genoa (FC Genoa and Sampdoria), this parking is often not available and parked cars are towed.
Train station / center
Near the Genova Brignole railway station you can find some white parking spaces in Via Giacomo Moresco. From there, it is only a few minutes' walk to the train station or to the centre (Via XX Settembre).
Port
Near the Genoa ferry port there are some free parking spaces in the office area around the street "Via de Marini". However, this zone is not considered particularly safe at night.

Free parking in Sestri Levante
In Liguria, you can find some free parking spaces in Sestri Levante.
Railway station
Near the railway station "Stazione Sestri Levante" in the square "Largo Giovanni Masi" there are some white parking lots. In the low season you can find free parking there, in summer it becomes very difficult.
Cemetery
Just outside the cemetery of Sestri Levante "Cimitero Capoluogo" (Via Val di Canepa) you can find a free parking space if it is not high season.
Alternatively, you can park in Sestri Levante in the paid car park in "Via della Chiusa" (in "Piazzale Enzo Grilli") in the blue zone. Payment for the parking space can also be made with the "Easypark" app.
Free parking in Arenzano
In Liguria you can find some free parking spaces in Arenzano.
Railway station
Near the railway station "Stazione Arenzano" there is the car park "Parcheggio Rodocanachi" in Piazza Paolo Rodocanachi. From there you can walk through the park at the villa "Comune di Arenzano" down to the center and to the promenade.
Free parking in Nervi
In Liguria, you can find some free parking in Nervi.
Port
Near the "Porticciolo di Nervi" harbor, you can find some white parking spaces on the street Via del Commercio. From there, it's not far to the popular seafront promenade "Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi."
Park
If you're feeling sporty, you can park near the "Parchi di Nervi" park on the street Via Sant'Ilario, which is located on the hill. It's a narrow one-way street where you can try your luck.
Alternatively, there's a paid parking lot, "Parcheggio Stazione di Genova Nervi," near the Nervi train station, right in front of the park entrance.
Free parking in Camogli
In Liguria, you can find some free parking spaces in Camogli.
Center
There are white parking spaces in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti – from there, you can quickly walk to the center (Via Giuseppe Garibaldi) and the beach. However, these spaces fill up quickly during peak season and on weekends.
Alternatively, there is a paid parking lot, "Parcheggio Comunale Via Ferrari," along the street “Via Gio Bono Ferrari”.
Free parking in Reggio Calabria
In Calabria, you can find some free parking spaces in the city of Reggio Calabria.
Railway station
Between the railway station "Reggio Calabria Centrale" and the sea there is a very large car park, which is listed in Google as Parcheggio "Tempietto". The car park is located at the end of the street "Via delle Mura Greche". Unfortunately, there is no railway underpass to reach the center on foot.
Centre
In the center of Reggio Calabria there is a blue zone, only in some cross streets such as the "Via Gaspare del Fosso" there are few white parking spaces. Also further up the hill, e.g. in the "Via Possidonea" I found some free parking spaces.
Port
Near the ferry port there is a large car park in the street "Viale Umberto Boccioni". From there you can walk to the port and take the passenger ferry (Liberty Lines) from Reggio Calabria to Messina for a day trip.
Free parking in Tropea
In Calabria, you can find some free parking spaces in Tropea.
Centre
In the center of Tropea you can find some white parking spaces at the entrance to the street "Viale Stazione" (SP17). If these are full, there is a large paid parking lot right next to them in the street "Via Accademia degli Affaticati". The center (Corso Vittoria Emanuele) is only 3 minutes away on foot.
Railway station
There are also some free parking spaces directly at the Tropea train station in the street "Contrada Ferrovia". From there you can reach the center (Corso Vittoria Emanuele) on foot in 10 minutes.
Free parking in Pizzo
In Calabria you can find some free parking in Pizzo.
Centre
A little above the center, in front of the "Santuario di San Francesco di Paola" in the street "Via M. Salomone" there are some white parking lots. From there you can walk along "Via San Francesco" in 7 minutes to reach Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the famous Tartufo ice cream.
Free parking in Scilla
In Calabria, you can find some free parking spaces in Scilla.
Centre
In the centre of Scilla you can park for free after the start of the village along the main road "Via Nazionale". Outside the summer season, you can easily find free parking spaces.
