The airport of Genoa is as unique as the city itself. In Genoa space is very limited, so the airport "Aeroporto Genova Cristoforo Colombo" was built on an artificial peninsula in the sea.
For a city of 600,000 inhabitants, the check-in is very small.
Despite this, Genoa Airport (IATA: GOA) is the only international and therefore the most important airport of Liguria.
The runway is with 2.5 km length extremely short and often it is very difficult to land due to the strong winds blowing from the sea.
In Genoa aeroplanes often cannot land due to strong winds and have to make several waiting loops over the sea or the they have to be forwarded to the next airport in Milan, Turin or Pisa.

Genoa Airport Transfer: Volabus
To transfer from the airport to the city center or to the port "Genova Porto", we recommend the airport bus Volabus.
The Volabus takes you from the airport to the main train stations "Genova Piazza Prinzipe" or "Genova Brignole".
Price 6 EUR single trip or 13 EUR for 3 people (prices 2023). You can buy the ticket on the bus.
The Volabus bus stop is located on the ground floor "Piano 0" at the airport exit.
If you want a transfer to the port, then the best way is to take the Volabus to the train station "Genova Stazione Principe" from where you can easily reach the Genoa cruise port "Porto Genova Stazione Marittime" and also the ferry port Genoa Terminal Traghetti.
a) Transfer to cruise port
From the Volabus station Genoa "Genova Stazione Principe" it is only about 200 m to the cruise port of Genoa "Porto Genova Stazione Marittime".
b) Transfer to ferry port
The Genoa ferry port "Terminal Traghetti Genova" is about 1.4 km away from the Genova Piazza Principe train station.
From P. Principe train station, take the bus number 3 which will bring you directly to the Terminal Traghetti.

Genova AIRlink – Bus Shuttle from airport to train station
The “Genova AIRlink” bus stop is located on the ground floor “Piano 0” at the exit. This bus takes you from the airport to the nearest train station in Sestri Ponente. The station is also called "Stazione Sestri Ponente" or "Stazione SP".
The Genova AIRlink Airport Shuttle Bus is available every day from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Departs every 15 minutes.
The transfer takes only 10 minutes. Price 1.60 EUR (prices 2023), you can use this AMT ticket to travel 100 minutes on all public transport, including trains within Genoa (to Nervi in the east or Voltri in the west).
The final stop is in the port area of Sestri Ponente, just 60 m from the train station, you just have to cross the tracks using the pedestrian bridge (elevator is also available).
Many regional trains run from the train station in Sestri Ponente, which will take you quickly for example to the main train stations Principe or Brignole.
Genoa Volataxi
Taxis are very expensive in Genoa. Taxi rides from Genoa airport to the city center cost about 20 EUR + motorway expenses, allowance for public holiday, …
However, “Radiotaxi Genova” offers a special taxi fare “flat rate” for rides from the airport to the main train stations Principe or Brignole.
Volataxi is particularly attractive if people share a taxi.
The prices you can find on a sign located next to the taxi stand located at the exit on the ground floor "Piano 0".

Bar with panoramic terrace “Caffè Pascucci”
A very special insider tip is the bar with panoramic terrace, which is located on the 2nd floor "Secondo piano". The access is not easy to find.
It is best to take the lift (on the 1st floor for departures, on the left side from the check-in counters) to go up to the "Terrazza Panoramica".
The Caffè Pascucci is very nice, pilots and stewardesses like to meet here. Right next to the bar you will find the exit to the terrace.
From here you have a fantastic view of the runway and the sea. There are some comfortable armchairs where you can enjoy the last few minutes with a good Italian cappuccino before your flight.
The caffè is normally open from 8am to 6:30pm

Air Dolomiti: cheap flights to Genoa
Unfortunately, the Genova City Airport offers only a few scheduled flights: Lufthansa Airdolomiti (Munich - Genoa, Frankfurt - Genoa) and Ita Airways (formerly Alitalia).
In addition, Genoa Airport is used by some low-cost airlines: Ryanair, Condor, myair and airone.
In 2022 there have been Ryanair flights from Vienna to Genoa in the summer season, the flight time was only 1.5 hours.
If you would like to fly from Germany, Switzerland or Austria to Genoa (GOA), then 90% of the flights will be from Munich to Genoa operated from Airdolomiti (Lufthansa Star Alliance Partner), as there are hardly any other direct flights and alternatives.

The airport "Milano Malpensa" is located 180 km north of Genoa and offers some low-cost flight connections.
There are many trains from Milan to Genoa, for example the high speed train “Freccia Bianca”
Genova City Airport expansion new gates
Since 2022 the airport is going to be expanded - 20 million euros will be invested. In 2023 four additional gates on the east wing of Genova City Airport should go into operation in order to be able to offer more flight connections from Genoa. Before there have been 8 gates available.
As part of the expansion, also a new "baggage handling system" will be installed, which will bring your bags on conveyor belts to the hopefully right aircraft. By the way, in Genoa there is located the company LEONARDO, which is specialized in these baggage handling systems, and the offic is right next to the airport.
Additional flights to Genoa for MSC cruises
In April 2023, the MSC World Europa arrived at the Genoa cruise port for the first time - with 333 m in length it is the largest MSC Cruises cruise ship in the Mediterranean.
The modern ship has space for 5,252 passengers, cruising from Genoa to Naples, Messina (Sicily), Valletta (Malta), Barcelona and Marseille.
Cruises are in high demand again. MSC has therefore announced that it is in talks with Genoa Airport to be able to offer additional flights to Genoa.
